Why you should touch grass today and everyday
In the rise of the pandemic, we do not have reasons to go outside anymore. Many of us have found ourselves confined to our homes. We can get groceries, connect with family and friends and many more with just one touch. Everything is within arm's reach. If you are like me, always holed up in a room or in the house and only touch grass --also known as going out of the house-- once in a blue moon, we have to change our ways and here is why.
What happens when we go out?
When we go outside, we are exposed to sunlight which results in the creation of vitamin D from cholesterol burning, providing energy for vitamin D synthesis. This vitamin D is needed by the body because it is important for the blood cells and the immune system (energizes special cells called T cells that help fight infection in the immune system). We are also exposed to substances that are released by many plants called phytoncides that boost the immune system. Additionally, it also helps the body absorb certain minerals more (e.g. calcium and phosphorus). Lack of vitamin D can cause various diseases and contribute to myriad aches and pains. Yes, we can consume and acquire vitamin D through food and various other ways, but it is not enough. The next thing that happens is a serotine boost that raises energy and keeps our mood calm, positive and focused. We are also physically active. Moreover, the sunlight also helps cells in eyes be exposed to enough light to get the body's internal clock working right and manage the sleep cycle. And last but not least, going outside allows us to interact with nature and fellow human beings.
Why should we make an effort to go outside?
Here is my own personal experience: I did not go out often even though I was told to or asked to meet up, and boy did it have an effect on me. One day I went outside to meet an old friend after a long time, and I noticed that I had changed. I felt like I was living the same day over and over, feeling stressed, and my mood started plummeting. After that day I was so energized and happy that I felt I could do anything, even fly.
Studies show that going outside improves memory, creativity and more. So, go outside, talk to trees, connect with fellow humans, improve your mood, be nice and appreciate life, even if it’s hard because it gets better, I promise.
